"Aesthetic Afterlife" opens at the Haggerty Museum of Art on January 22

Aesthetic Afterlife, an exhibition by the Chipstone Foundation, opens at the Haggerty Museum of Art on January 22 and includes artwork by William Andersen, Niki Johnson, Yevgeniya Kaganovich, Heather McCalla, Jason Ramey, and Hongtao Zhou. Four exhibits will be opening that evening with Brian Ulrich lecturing at 6:00PM as part of the opening.

WHERE IS THE PANCHEN LAMA?

The present (11th) incarnation of the Panchen Lama is a matter of controversy: the People's Republic of China asserts it is Gyancain Norbu, while the 14th Dalai Lama asserted it was Gedhun Choekyi Nyima on May 14, 1995. The latter vanished from public eye shortly after being named, aged six. Chinese authorities stated that Gedhun had been taken into protective custody from those that would spirit him into exile. However, most believe he is now held in captivity against the wishes of the Tibetan people. Tibetans and human rights groups continue to campaign for his release.

Kunchok Phelgye, a 24-year-old-monk from the Sumdo Monastery in Dzoege region of eastern Tibet passed away in his self-immolation protest today. The exile base 

of the Kirti Monastery in Dharamshala, in a release, said that Kunchok Phelgye set himself on fire in front of the main assembly hall of the Taktsang Lhamo Kirti Monastery at around 5:20 pm (local time). “Kunchok Phelgye was enveloped in flames and his hands were joined in prayers as he raised slogans for the long life and return of His Holiness the Dalai Lama and Kyabje Kirti Rinpoche, the exiled head of Kirti Monastery,” the release said citing sources in the region. “He also raised slogans calling for the return and reunification of Tibetans.” Kunchok Phelgye succumbed to his injuries at the site of his protest. Monks of the Monastery surrounded Kunchok Phelgye’s burning body and began to recite the prayer, “Losang Gyalwa Kungi Nyingje Ter…” (usually recited in Kirti Rinpoche’s honour). Later, Kunchok Phelgye’s body was carried to his quarters in the Monastery where hundreds of monks and local Tibetans continue to visit to offer their last respects and prayers.

Tobgye Tseten, who died from self-immolation in Lhasa this week, was from Xiahe County, or Labrang in Tibetan, the seat of the famous Labrang Monastery. It is one of my favorite places in the world. When I talked with Tibetans in Labrang in 1996 there was obvious discontent over Chinese rule and the situation only has gotten worse. I don't have my photos of Labrang with me in Kuwait but found this wonderful photo on China Mike's website, he seems like a great guy:  http://www.china-mike.com/

This man, Chen Guangcheng, is extraordinary -- a blind human rights activist in China who has been brutally mistreated and beaten while under house arrest. Now he has escaped and is said to be hiding in the US Embassy in Beijing. The problem is he's stuck there: the Chinese police can't enter to arrest him, but he can't leave the Embassy grounds for fear of renewed arrest and torture. I hope no one in the US government would ever think of ordering Chen to leave. Don't even think it!

Chen Guangcheng, a blind Chinese legal activist who has escaped from home imprisonment, is believed to have gone into hiding in Beijing, amid unconfirmed reports he has taken refuge in the US embassy. A self-schooled legal advocate, Chen had campaigned against forced abortions.
