My new paintings will be exhibited at 'TALK LOVE … ACT PEACE' opening Sunday, September 21st, 6:30-9:30pm at Contemporary Art Platform Kuwait. The charity art exhibition showcases diverse art from around the world to help fund children in Gaza, in collaboration with Gassan Kanafani Foundation, and to fund Kuwait's Child Rights Association. Hosted by the extraordinary Amira Behbehani and in celebration of Global Peace Day and Peace One Day - Kuwait. Student Recycled Art Competition @ The Avenues

The next phase of AUK students' participation in the REUSE competition will take place at the Avenues from January 9-11, 10am-10pm. The public will be able to vote for their favorite artwork made from recycled materials. Twelve winners of AUK's own REUSE Exhibition will have their artwork compete against artwork from other local university students. Attached is the poster for the REUSE Recycled Art Competition @ The Avenues, in English and Arabic.

A Space for National Achievement

Achievements are marked by and created through awards and ceremony. The combination of object and event creates a spectacle intended to impose specific impressions onto individuals, groups and even the nation as a whole. Within our region the individual stands in for their family, and subsequently the nation. Although we are often hailed as part of a cohesive whole, our individual actions-and as a consequence our achievements-become the defining factor of a broader social and political structure. A Space for National Achievement calls into question the accumulation of superlatives, and asks us to contend with the disconnect between a lavish award and the achievement it recognizes. This relationship becomes a way to manage image and control perception. In our societies awards merely reinforce what already exists, rather than mark material gains. This symbolic power is actualized in this exhibition, which asks us to consider how national achievement is situated. In fact, these discourses are part of a systematic framework that organizes our existence.

The basic objectives of the GCC are to effect collaboration, transformation and inter-connection between Artists in all fields in order to achieve unity between them: Being fully aware of the ties of special relations, common characteristics and similar systems founded on the creed of Art which bind them; and in conformity with the Charter of the Federation of Gulf Artists which calls for the realization of closer relations and stronger bonds; and having the conviction that coordination, cooperation, and integration between them serve the sublime objectives of the GCC; and,

Amal Khalaf presents, "Mapping the Possible"

Al Thuluth Al Akheer is the name of a recently established lecture series taking place inside of the National Council for Culture Arts and Letters focusing on critical aesthetic practices.

About the talk: Amal Khalaf will speak about the Serpentine Gallery's Edgware Road Project, a durational commissioning and residency project, established in 2009 and based at the project's itinerant headquarters the Centre for Possible Studies. The talk will highlight the possibilities and specific opportunities for encounters with diverse communities that the project offers, hosting events, workshops, exhibitions and interventions in spaces as diverse as the Serpentine Gallery to coffee shops, shisha bars, restaurants and schools. The Edgware Road Projects' programmes is informed by the desires of local communities and have lead to unexpected, sometimes confrontational but always enlightening encounters between artists and residents and business owners in the Edgware Road neighbourhood.

Bio:
Amal Khalaf is a researcher and curator and currently the Associate Curator of Projects at the Serpentine Gallery working on the Edgware Road Project. With an MA in Contemporary Art Theory from Goldsmiths, her research addresses themes of urbanism, community, media activism and art through participatory projects, and media initiatives. Previously, she has worked with Al Riwaq Gallery, Bahrain, and participated in setting up an art space in an abandoned railway arch in East London, Hold&Freight (2008-2009). Upcoming publications include; co-authouring Moving Image and Everyday Life: Cairo, London and Shanghai with Amsterdam University Press (2013).

The Serpentine Gallery's Edgware Road Project brings together artists, residents, shop-owners and others to investigate, activate and imagine futures for the Edgware Road. International artists collaborate closely with the neighbourhood through a series of residencies, commissions and exhibitions to explore and celebrate the history, cultures and experiences of the many communities centred on the Edgware Road. The project base is the Centre for Possible Studies derived from encounters on, to and from the Edgware Road.

TONIGHT Global Peace Day MUSIC & KIDS!

As part of Kuwait’s celebration of Global Peace Day, an exhibition entitled ‘In the Name of Peace’ is showcasing interpretations of ‘peace’ by local and international artists. The exhibition is being held at the Contemporary Art Platform (CAP) and is featuring pieces by AUK Graphic Design Professors Maryam Hosseinnia and William Andersen, as well as pieces by AUK alumnus Faisal Mohammad.

‘In the Name of Peace’ was launched on September 15th continues through mid-October. Part of the proceeds collected from sold items will be donated to Khair Al-Kuwait, a non-profit foundation devoted to the concept of volunteerism, and Loyac, a non-profit organization working towards the overall development of the youth. The celebration of Global Peace Day also includes live music and activities for children, which will be held at the CAP Kuwait Warehouse on September 21st, starting at 5:30pm, as well as a ‘Global Peace Ride’ by the Kuwait Riders and Phoenician Riders from Costa Bedai on September 20th at 4:00pm.

يشارك اساتذة الفن التشكيلي و التصميم الجرافيكي بالجامعة الامريكية في الكويت بالمعرض الفني الذي تقيمه قاعة كاب للفنون تحت عنوان "باسم السلام"، و الذي يأتي ضمن احتفالات اليوم العالمي للسلام. و قد قدم كل من الاستاذة مريم حسينية و الاستاذوليام اندرسن أعمالهم الفنية التي تعبر عن مفاهيم السلام، كما يشارك في المعرض خريج الجامعة الامريكية، فيصل محمد، ضمن كوكبة من الفنانين التشكيليين المحليينو العالميين.

تم افتتاح المعرض يوم 15 سبتمبر و يستمر على مدار شهر، حيث يتخلله عدةفعاليات ترفيهية و ثقافية تقام على هامش المعرض.  و يذكر أن جزء من عائد المعرضسوف يتم تخصيصه لدعم منظمات انسانية وخيرية كما هو الحال سنوياً بجميعفعاليات  "يوم السلام "  في مختلف انحاء العالم.
