A good review of the art scene in Kuwait for 2012

Abdulaziz Al-Humaidhi's work from “Out of Kuwait” at the Museum of Modern Art

A very good review of the art scene in Kuwait:

It is the 2nd annual selection of the best art exhibitions and events in Kuwait (see the previous one). If in 2011 it was important to see and try to feature all art events in Kuwait, in 2012 we had an aim to distinguish the quality of the presented art as well as the idea of the exhibition itself, that’s why less photo coverages were done even if the quantity of art events has increased.

"Out of Kuwait" exhibit opens 7pm on October 17 @ Museum of Modern Art, Kuwait

Contemporary Art Platform is pleased to invite you to:

"Out of Kuwait"
exhibition - Wednesday 17th of October 2012 at 7:00 pm at the Museum of Modern Art, Kuwait.

CAP, British Council Kuwait and the National Council for Culture, Arts and Letters, will celebrate "Out of Kuwait" who brings together the work of twelve Kuwait-based artists who have examined and reinterpreted the theme of landscape art during a one month artist residency programme called Landscapes Expanded. The exhibition presents the artists’ analysis of their everyday surroundings and comments on the social, political, and physical landscapes of contemporary Kuwait.

This unique opportunity was inspired by the best of Britain’s Landscape artists, whose work is seen in the British Council’s Out of Britain exhibition currently open at Contemporary Art Platform Kuwait. The programme has given artists living in Kuwait the chance to explore contemporary issues related to site, space and place in their field of work.

Landscapes Expanded was open to candidates from all creative and academic disciplines with the understanding that this would create a trans-disciplinary forum for thinking and working. Each participant’s expertise and experience in their own field helped to inform the work generated by the rest of the group. For individuals outside of formal education this type of stimulating platform is rare. Led by artist and curator Alia Farid Abdal, who explores personal perspectives of public space and constructed landscapes in her own art work and academic research. Participating in the programme are architects Aziz Al Humaidhi and Roa AlShaheen, architecture undergraduate Amani Adel Al Thuwaini, spatial designer Aseel Al Yaqoub, Religion, Literature and Arts graduate, Nima Algooneh, English Literature graduate, Zahra Al Mahdi, jewellery designer, Muneera Al Sharhan, painters Lewis Chapman and Eman Musallem, English and American Literature graduate Faisal Hamadah, journalist Naser Al Wasmi, and Middle East Studies graduate, Ceyda Oskay.

One of my favorite artists now has a solo show up in Qatar! I believe Doha's Mathaf, the Arab Museum of Modern Art, is really smart in bringing in a big name artist from outside the region, but also just as importantly, not the typical Western artist. I like Cai Guo-Qiang because he consistently comes up with thoughtful but unconventional ways to talk about his own heritage as well as historical and contemporary global trade and exchange. His artwork is smart but fun and easily appreciated by a larger audience. I hope to go soon!

Art as the politics of the impossible

In light of a recent art exhibition in Doha, Hamid Dabashi writes that art must respond to a renewed Arab consciousness that is aware of what is happening in the Arab World.

Art scenes in the Arab world should reflect and anticipate the art that will emerge from these historical times.

"If there is one person who is still not free, then I am not; if there is one person who still suffers from insult and humiliation, then I do. Do you understand yet?" ~ Ai Weiwei

One of the best articles on Ai Weiwei's detention that I have read yet:

Ai Weiwei: the dissident artist | Art and design | The Guardian

He filled Tate Modern's Turbine Hall with sunflower seeds and campaigned against corruption. Then last month China's most provocative artist disappeared. Hari Kunzru on Ai Weiwei.

Modern Arab Art conference December 14-17 in Doha, Qatar

The Museum of Modern Arab Art is expected to be completed in 2011.
The Association for Modern and Contemporary Art of the Arab World, Iran, and Turkey (AMCA) is organizing its first conference, titled “Modern Arab Art: Objects, Histories, and Methodologies.” This two-day event will be hosted in collaboration with Mathaf: Arab Museum of Modern Art in Doha, Qatar, and will take place December 14–17, 2010, in conjunction with the museum’s inauguration events.

The museum will use its preeminent collection of modern and contemporary Arab art as a catalyst for critical and creative exchanges across diverse audiences, and this conference will bring together both established and emerging scholars working throughout the world in order to interrogate potent issues of concern that define and shape modern Arab art today. The conference will also historicize and contextualize the production of modern Arab art and modernity—and by extension the “contemporary”—through thematic and historiographic inquires into the field.
