"Aesthetic Afterlife" opens at the Haggerty Museum of Art on January 22

Aesthetic Afterlife, an exhibition by the Chipstone Foundation, opens at the Haggerty Museum of Art on January 22 and includes artwork by William Andersen, Niki Johnson, Yevgeniya Kaganovich, Heather McCalla, Jason Ramey, and Hongtao Zhou. Four exhibits will be opening that evening with Brian Ulrich lecturing at 6:00PM as part of the opening.

•You Will Be a Probationary Teacher Forever. Walker's Wisconsin is the only state in America where all teachers have lost tenure or career status.

•At the Same Time that Governor Walker Has Made Billions of Dollars in Cuts to Public Education ( the Deepest Cuts in Wisconsin's History), Governor Walker Has Proposed Increasing Aid To Unaccountable Voucher Schools By 32 %. No state in America has made more severe cuts to public education than Wisconsin.

•Governor Walker Specifically Targeted Teachers With a Rule Change Forever Limiting Teacher Raises Well Below the Inflation Rate.

•In Walker's Wisconsin, Many School Districts Are Reducing Salaries, Eliminating Benefits, and Increasing Teacher Workload: Use the information on the District pages to find out which school districts are aggressively repealing the gains teachers made over 40 years of collective bargaining by enacting regressive employment rules requiring extended teacher workdays, 60+ hour workweeks, required weekend work, adding weeks of teaching or inservice training to the contracted year, eliminating preparation time, taking away sick days, eliminating retirement benefits, and making severe reductions in salaries and benefits.
•Governor Walker & his Republican Allies have repealed Equal Pay for Equal Work laws in Wisconsin. This opens the door to paying male teachers significantly more than female teachers as was common in Wisconsin prior to the 1970's.
•Before You Sign a Contract, Find Out the Amount of the Contract Breakage Fee. Many school districts have imposed massive contract breakage fees (often $3,000+) to limit teachers' ability to leave for a better employment opportunity. A good rule of thumb for job candidates: The most demanding, even abusive districts to work for often have the highest contract breakage fees. Once you sign that first contract, they HAVE you and are going to do everything possible to keep you from leaving for a better career opportunity.

Sept. 27 - Jan. 13, 2013

This group show featuring work by Marna Brauner, Christopher Davis-Benavides, Hai Chi Jihn, Cima Katz, Denis Sargent, Maria Tomasula, and Jan Ru Wan plays off the idea of the garden as a collection of specimens, much like 16th century cabinets of curiosities.

I have 3 artworks in this exhibition that will be up for another month!  Please join the reception this Friday evening, September 14, 2012, as the Peck School of the Arts and the Department of Art and Design present Continuum 2012 in both the Union Art Gallery and the Arts Center Gallery.  The reception honoring 50 years of UW-Milwaukee Visual Art Alumni will be held from 5:00-7:00pm in the Union Art Gallery and 6:00-8:00pm in the Arts Center Gallery.

Refreshments will be served in the Union Art Gallery beginning at 5:00pm.  The Dept of Art and Design Chair's remarks begin at 7:00pm in the Arts Center Gallery.

Lecture: Palace Tantra: Emperor Qianlong’s Fascination with Tibetan Buddhism

Explore the emperor's interest in Buddhism, as reflected in his art collection, with John Johnston, Coates-Cowden-Brown Curator of Asian Art, San Antonio Museum of Art.

This lecture is presented in conjunction with the Museum's summer-long CHINA series, five exhibitions covering 3,000 years of Chinese art and culture.

John Johnston assumed the Coates-Cowden-Brown Curatorship of Asian Art at the San Antonio Museum of Art (SAMA) in February 2009. Mr. Johnston received his training at the University of Hawaii (MA, 1995) and the Honolulu Academy of Arts. He has conducted lengthy art historical fieldwork in Bhutan, China, Thailand, and Japan. Previous work includes university-level teaching and auction house experience. Mr. Johnston's research interests include the Buddhist art of Bhutan, Chinese porcelain and ceramics, jade, and the history of printing. Mr. Johnston speaks locally, nationally, and internationally on these and other topics.

Articles by Mr. Johnston have appeared in Orientations, Arts of Asia, Far Eastern Economic Review, and other publications. He is co-author and co-curator of the internationally acclaimed catalogue and exhibition The Dragon's Gift: The Sacred Arts of Bhutan organized by the Honolulu Academy of Arts. Mr. Johnston is project director, curator, and catalogue co-author for the forthcoming international exhibition 5,000 Years of Chinese Jade Featuring Selections from the National Museum of History, Taiwan organized by SAMA (opens September 30, 2011). Exhibitions at SAMA curated by Mr. Johnston include Music in Medieval China, Seasons of Beauty: Yoshitoshi's Thirty-two Aspects of Daily Life, and the forthcoming exhibition Chinese Cricket Cages: The Ernest K.H. Lee Collection (opens December 9, 2011).

The panel on Ai Weiwei put the artists "release" in perspective and was both a condemnation of MAM's initial response and, to a lesser degree, a vindication of sorts as well.

It was telling that it was the political science professor and not the art experts who best articulated the meaning of Chinese artist Ai Weiwei's detention at a recent panel discussion at the Milwaukee Art Museum.
