Graphic Design (Position Code No. 13-101): Rank open; Successful candidates will teach Graphic Design courses at all levels in an expanding undergraduate degree (BA) program; contribute in area of specialization; advise students. The ideal candidate is well versed in graphic design theory and application, industry standards, and traditional and digital media. Degree Requirement: Terminal Graduate degree in Graphic Design (M.F.A. or above).

1) Cover letter, detailing the candidate’s specific interest in AUK, and how the candidate’s past experience provides a suitable basis for performance in the position for which they are applying;
2) A current CV;
3) Statement on research and service and statement of teaching methodology, including curricular development that the individual has initiated and executed;
4.) Copies of teaching evaluations if available; and supervisor evaluations (as available).
5) The names and addresses, both electronic and postal, of three referees.
6) 10-20 digital examples of personal work and 10-20 examples of student work;

The American University of Kuwait (AUK) is a private university in Kuwait organized on the U.S. model of undergraduate liberal arts education. The medium of instruction is English. Never has the dedication of the people who practice the teaching profession been spotlighted in the way it has over the past few days. We were shown, in dramatic terms, to what lengths teachers are willing to go to fulfill the crucial mandate they have been given: the education and welfare of the most precious members of our society. Yet they are so often treated with disdain.

Teaching is a calling. Not everyone has the will or the stamina to do it well. It takes love, pride, and an almost sacred commitment that can't be explained in words. In America, teachers have traditionally been underpaid, because in America's early communities, "schoolmarms" were always spinsters who were not expected to support families.

In other countries, the teaching profession is considered so noble that it is well paid in comparison to many other professions, as it should be. In this country, politicians—acting as proxies for taxpayers—haggle with, lowball, denigrate and harass teachers as if their demands for job security and decent pay are unreasonable and selfish.

A teacher invests in the future, student by student, and his or her legacy consists of the product of those students' fertile minds. Occasionally, teachers are even called upon to throw themselves into harm's way to protect the lives of their charges as if they were their own children—and last week six of them demonstrated most profoundly that they do not shrink from the task. About this, no one can argue.

So, who deserves to be paid more, and what does the reality tell us about our priorities?"

Graphic Design (Position Code No. 11-201- AUKWEB12): The Graphic Design Program at AUK, Division of Arts and Humanities is seeking candidates for full time Assistant Professor of Graphic Design positions to begin August 2012. The successful candidates will be expected to teach graphic design core and foundation courses at all levels in a developing undergraduate BA degree program. They will also be expected to contribute in their area of specialization in one or more of the following areas: digital media, graphic design history and/or photography. Candidates should be comfortable teaching undergraduates in a multi-cultural context with a focus in foundations. Other responsibilities include: engage in research, serve as an academic advisor to Graphic Design majors, contribute to curriculum and program assessment and development. Candidates must have a graduate degree in graphic design (MFA), teaching experience as well as a demonstrated record of professional design practice recognized through publications, exhibitions or equivalent.
