Academia's indentured servants

Sadly, this is one of the main reason that I am now teaching overseas, but there are other very positive reasons too. (click on link): Academia's indentured servants

"To work outside of academia, even temporarily, signals you are not "serious" or "dedicated" to scholarship," writes author [AP]

Higher Education's Train to Nowhere

Higher Education's Train to Nowhere

Paul Stoller

There is an alarming disconnect in contemporary higher education. As I have been saying in this space for more than two years, the university-as-corporation threatens to undermine the foundation of a world-class system of education and diminish the quality of our future social life.
One of the ramifications of university corporatization has been an increasing disregard for the intellectual dimensions of the professorial life. In the name of technological efficiency an increasingly bloated cadre of university technocrats flood our in-boxes with mindless minutia. These institutional requirements -- assessment outcomes, mission statements, five year plans, and so on -- have become so burdensome that there is precious little time for intellectual pursuit. During the academic year it is difficult to find the "leisure" to read current research reports, prepare grant proposals, design new courses, refine lectures, or write an article or a book? In the current environment of institutional reviews and performance assessments, who has time to think?

U.S. Embassy in Kuwait will be closed on Sunday, August 4

dos_image.jpg
U.S. Embassy Kuwait
Emergency Message for U.S. Citizens – August 1, 2013

The Department of State has instructed certain U.S. Embassies and Consulates to remain closed or to suspend operations on Sunday, August 4.  The Department has been apprised of information that, out of an abundance of caution and care for our employees and others who may be visiting our installations, indicates we should institute these precautionary steps. It is possible we may have additional days of closings as well, depending on our analysis. Accordingly, the U.S. Embassy in Kuwait will be closed on Sunday, August 4.

All U.S. citizen services appointments and visa appointments have been cancelled and have been rescheduled on an individual basis. For further information, please contact the Consular Section at consularkuwaitm@state.gov.

The Department, when conditions warrant, takes steps like this to balance our continued operations with security and safety.  However, beyond this announcement we do not discuss specific threat information, security considerations or measures, or other steps we may be taking.

For further information, we refer you to the Worldwide Caution put out by the Department dated February 19, 2013, repeated below:

As a matter of general practice, U.S. citizens should avoid areas where large gatherings may occur. Even demonstrations intended to be peaceful can turn confrontational and escalate into violence.  You should avoid areas of demonstrations, and exercise caution if in the vicinity of any large gatherings, protests, or demonstrations.

Review your personal security plans; remain aware of your surroundings, including local events; and monitor local news stations for updates.  Maintain a high level of vigilance, take appropriate steps to enhance your personal security and follow instructions of local authorities.

We strongly recommend that U.S. citizens traveling to or residing in Kuwait enroll in the Department of State's Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP).   STEP enrollment gives you the latest security updates, and makes it easier for the U.S. embassy or nearest U.S. consulate to contact you in an emergency. If you don't have Internet access, enroll directly with the nearest U.S. embassy or consulate.

For the latest security information, U.S. citizens traveling abroad should regularly monitor the Department of State's Internet website at travel.state.gov where the Worldwide Caution, Country Specific Information, Travel Warnings, and Travel Alerts can be found. Follow us on Twitter and the Bureau of Consular Affairs page on Facebook as well. Download our free Smart Traveler app, available through iTunes or Google Play, to have travel information at your fingertips.

Up to date information on security can also be obtained by calling 1-888-407-4747 toll free in the United States and Canada, or, for callers outside the United States and Canada, a regular toll line at 1-202-501-4444. These numbers are available from 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. Eastern Time, Monday through Friday (except U.S. federal holidays).

The U.S. Embassy is located at Al-Masjid Al-Aqsa Street, Block 6, Plot 14, Bayan, Kuwait.  If you are a U.S. citizen in need of emergency assistance in Kuwait, you may reach the U.S. Embassy by calling +965-2259-1001 and requesting the duty officer.

PETITION TO CONGRESS: Pass Elizabeth Warren's Glass-Steagall Bill

This regulation never should have been cut and helped engender the recent financial crisis. If we don't want it to happen again, we must bring it back!

Elizabeth Warren introduced a new Glass-Steagall bill to stop Wall Street banks from gambling with the life savings of regular families. It will also help prevent future bailouts. For more, click the link below:

Bipartisan report says tops US officials to blame for 'cruel and inhuman' treatment of detainees

The first shipment of 20 prisoners arrived at Guantánamo on January 11, 2002 [GALLO/GETTY]
Bipartisan report says tops officials to blame for 'cruel and inhuman' treatment of detainees. A new report looking into the torture of detainees in the US after September 11, 2001 attack has said intelligence officers and military forces practiced torture. The US military detention centre at Guantanamo Bay is the symbol of everything the country has done wrong since the September 11 attacks, according to a bipartisan group of former officials and academics. The group, which reviewed US detention and rendition practices, has concluded that US interrogators committed torture while questioning detainees, and there is no proof the torture gave authorities any information to prevent future attacks. Seasoned interrogators have confirmed the report finding that harsh interrogation techniques were ineffective and there was no rational for their use, whether practical or moral. | Watch Rosiland Jordan's report from Capitol Hill here:http://aje.me/15kT7Oc

What Sandy Hook taught us about teachers

Link to original post by Chan Lowe (click here)
The cartoonist Chan Lowe created this image and wrote the following: "As the nation wades into parallel and interconnected discussions about gun rights, mental illness and the culture of violence in this country, we should also be considering a topic no less related to the Connecticut school tragedy: Are we doing right by our teachers?

Never has the dedication of the people who practice the teaching profession been spotlighted in the way it has over the past few days. We were shown, in dramatic terms, to what lengths teachers are willing to go to fulfill the crucial mandate they have been given: the education and welfare of the most precious members of our society. Yet they are so often treated with disdain.

Teaching is a calling. Not everyone has the will or the stamina to do it well. It takes love, pride, and an almost sacred commitment that can't be explained in words. In America, teachers have traditionally been underpaid, because in America's early communities, "schoolmarms" were always spinsters who were not expected to support families.

In other countries, the teaching profession is considered so noble that it is well paid in comparison to many other professions, as it should be. In this country, politicians—acting as proxies for taxpayers—haggle with, lowball, denigrate and harass teachers as if their demands for job security and decent pay are unreasonable and selfish.

A teacher invests in the future, student by student, and his or her legacy consists of the product of those students' fertile minds. Occasionally, teachers are even called upon to throw themselves into harm's way to protect the lives of their charges as if they were their own children—and last week six of them demonstrated most profoundly that they do not shrink from the task. About this, no one can argue.

So, who deserves to be paid more, and what does the reality tell us about our priorities?"

Crazy Guy + Gun = 26 Dead vs. Crazy Guy + Knife = No Dead

So many right wingers have been trying to use the example of the school attack in China as a reason to say, "Attacks will happen anyway, so what difference does it make whether or not we have stricter gun laws?"

I guess they don't see any difference between children who are alive and children who are not.

$7.6 million in salary increases for Hostess executives while filing for bankruptcy?

It wasn't the unions. THE EXECUTIVES TOOK EVERYTHING!

"I am a Hostess employee. Hostess stopped our pension contributions a yr & a half ago. Then they gave the top execs pay raises of 30-80%. They offered new contracts: no pension payments (no retirement plan at all for union employees, but company management still gets contributions to their retirement plans) for another 2 & 1/2 yrs, and then a 75% reduction in pension when they do start paying into it again; we have to pay an ADDITIONAL $200/ mo for health insurance; They took away our last cost of living raise; they gave us an 8% wage cut on top of that; they are outsourcing all of the office work to Manilla."

Harry Reid Was Right: Mitt Romney Paid No Taxes for 15 Years

This just about makes me sick and any working class individual that now knows this information and still votes for Romney I have no respect for... he is voting against his own best interests and the best interests of the USA.

Harry Reid Was Right: Mitt Romney Paid No Taxes for 15 Years

Who is really the "entitlement" society?

When wealthy, tax dodging elites call Social Security and Medicare "entitlements," it's a slap in the face to every hard working, tax paying American.

Who are the 47% freeloaders Romney speaks of at a $50,000-a-plate dinner?

"The people who receive the disproportionate share of government spending are not big-government lovers. They are Republicans. They are senior citizens. They are white men with high school degrees." -Conservative Columnist David Brooks
