Tibet Self-Immolations Move to Lhasa

Tobgye Tseten, who died from self-immolation in Lhasa this week, was from Xiahe County, or Labrang in Tibetan, the seat of the famous Labrang Monastery. It is one of my favorite places in the world. When I talked with Tibetans in Labrang in 1996 there was obvious discontent over Chinese rule and the situation only has gotten worse. I don't have my photos of Labrang with me in Kuwait but found this wonderful photo on China Mike's website, he seems like a great guy:  http://www.china-mike.com/

The self-immolations were the most significant act of protest to take place in heavily patrolled city of Lhasa since the uprising in 2008.

During the exhibition, a number of AUK students and professors showcased their work under two categories; the Social Programs category and the Community category. The AUK exhibits included artwork made of reused or re-purposed materials that promote environmental conservation. The AUK delegation was led by Professor William Andersen of the Art and Graphic Design Program, and Professor Charles Cange of the newly introduced Environmental Studies Minor Program at AUK. AUK's Environmental Studies Program is the first of its kind in Kuwait...

AUK Graphic Design Capstone Exhibition opens Monday, 14 May 6-8pm

Dear colleagues and friends,

It is with great hope that you can join us for the 2012 graphic design senior portfolio / capstone exhibition held at the Auditorium and the Multipurpose room of the American University of Kuwait. The opening reception is on Monday, 14 May from 6:00 – 8:00 pm. The exhibit is open to
the public from 15 – 17 May from 10 – 7 pm.

This graphic design exhibition showcases students' capstone projects, an outcome of a semester-long self initiated topic implemented through diverse applications. The course is largely self-directed and students are expected to select and investigate a topic using design as a means to present their findings. Social activism campaigns to re-brand identity is the core essence of this year’s exhibition.

We'd be honored if you came.

Prof. Maryam Hosseinnia + capstone students
